JOSEPH IN THE DUNGEON.
Please read Cpt 39:21.
As we read in our previous study, Joseph is imprisoned with all the prisoners of the King.
We are reminded in verse 21..
“THE LORD WAS WITH JOSEPH, AND SHOWED HIM MERCY AND GAVE HIM FAVOUR IN THE SIGHT OF THE KEEPER OF THE PRISON.”
So Joseph had charge over all the prisoners, everything was in his control .. and God prospered him.
One day the Butler and the Baker offended the King of Egypt, and in a rage he cast them into the prison. The captain charged Joseph to care for them, so he put them in the place where he himself slept.
After a season in ward, both men dreamed a dream. You can read about their dreams in Cpt 40:9-23.
Joseph interpreted their dreams, but he made it very clear that the interpretation belongs unto God.“God is here” he said, “even in this prison.”
The Butler then shared with Joseph his dream.
And Joseph gave the interpretation ..
“Within three days,” he said, “Pharaoh will lift you up out of prison and you will be restored to your position as Chief Butler once more. You will continually serve him again.”
The Butler let out a huge sigh of relief, It was heard throughout the ward, The prisoners cheered!
Now the Baker felt more confident to share with Joseph his dream.
His interpretation was not as he expected ..
Joseph said, “You will .. in three days be hung from a tree and the birds will eat your flesh!!”
The Baker began to wail, clutching at Joseph’s clothes. “No! No, .. you’re wrong, .. it won’t happen. Pharaoh wouldn’t hang me!!”
Joseph gently settled him down, then left.
As he was leaving, he turned to the Butler and pleadingly said, “When you are restored again, please think of me, and mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this house. I have done nothing for which they have put me in this prison.”
Three days later it was the King’s birthday and every word that Joseph spoke was fulfilled.
Except .. the Butler forgot all about Joseph!
So he remained in prison, that “hell hole” of punishment. Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, and months turned into l-o-n-g years!
He did not say, “Well praise the Lord! Oh glory!”
But deep in his heart, through all, the disappointment and hopelessness and helplessness, with tears running secretly down his face .. at night, He would continue to say ..
“THE LORD “IS WITH ME.”
Maybe you are imprisoned in the dungeon of depression, disappointment and despair. Remember that the Lord is “ever” with you. Put your trust in Jesus to save your soul and set you free from whatever prison that is holding you captive.
See Isa 61:1. “He opens prison doors, and sets the captive free!”
At the end of two full years Pharaoh himself dreamed two troubling dreams, see Cpt 41:1-8.
He called all the magicians and all the wise men in Egypt .. No-one could interpret them!
THE BUTLER REMEMBERS JOSEPH.
The butler suddenly remembers about his own days of imprisonment .. He gasping for air said, “Oh King, I do remember my faults this day.”
“There is a Hebrew who was in prison with me. He interpreted my dream. He spoke of you, oh King. He said that you would elevate me to my former position. He was right!”
Pharaoh sent and called Joseph out of prison.
Joseph first shaved himself of his long beard, changed himself by putting off his prison clothes and wearing clean clothes and presented himself before Pharaoh.
(Jesus takes from us, our prison clothes and He presents us before the King of Kings dressed in pure white robes of “His Righteousness.”)
“Hebrew” Pharaoh asked, “can you interpret dreams?”
Joseph blatently answered .. “No! .. I cannot!”
The Butler froze! Pharaoh frowned in scorn, his face reddening! Joseph said quickly, “God within me can interpret your dreams.”
Read about Pharaoh’s dreams in Chapter, 41:17- 45. Here is the interpretation from the Lord.
“There will be seven years of great prosperity throughout the land of Egypt. There will be more than enough for all Egypt .. to eat.”
“Then learn, that the next seven years, will be years of hunger and famine like it has never been before.”
Joseph looked steadily into Pharaoh’s eyes ..“God is forewarning you Pharaoh, this will surely happen! The land will be consumed and it shall be very grievous.”
“These are God’s instructions .. find a man who will be wise and diligent, who will gather grain from the years of plenty and store it in granaries to have enough for the seven years of famine.”
Pharaoh came toward Joseph and said, “Since God is with you” v 38.
“I will put you over all my house and over the land of Egypt. You are now second to my Throne.”
Then Pharaoh placed his precious signet ring on Joseph’s finger, saying, “In my name you shall issue orders and seal them with this ring.”
So he arrayed Joseph in Royal robes and hung a thick gold chain around his neck. He continued ..”Every man shall bow before you .. No man will lift his hand or foot without your permission.” Joseph, somewhat dazed, bowed before Pharaoh in complete submission.
This reminds me of Roman’s 4:20,21,
“HE STAGGERED NOT AT THE PROMISES OF GOD …. HE WAS FULLY PERSUADED THAT WHAT GOD HAD PROMISED HE WAS ALSO ABLE TO PERFORM.”
This speaks of Abraham, and it had been ingrained into Joseph’s mind by his dear father Jacob, and his great grandfather Abraham.
For those of you who are in Christ this wonderful promise is just for you.
“ALL THE PROMISES OF GOD IN HIM (JESUS) ARE YES AND AMEN, TO THE GLORY, OF GOD BY US” 1Cor 1:20.
