THE BOOK OF EXODUS.The Golden Calf.

THE GOLDEN CALF.

To Aaron, the Glory of God was like a thick cloud of smoke and red fire, raging in the high gorges of Mt Sinai.

He watched as his brother Moses strides away from Israel toward the mountain. Moses grew smaller and smaller among the huge bolders. He could see him pause for a moment, take a deep breath then wind his way upward, appearing and disappearing among the rocky crags of the mountain, then disappearing altogether..

Aaron felt a cold shiver run down his spine, he felt frightened for his brother.
Soon the days turned into weeks .. one .. two .. three.. and four weeks pass, and still no sight of Moses.

The people began to mumble, “What’s happened to him?” Aaron sensed a spirit of panic arise in the people, it began to spread throughout the camp. (See how easy it is to influence one another)

Someone shouted,”He is dead!” Then another yelled, “Who is our leader now?”
Then a woman sobbing, cried, “We are all alone out here,”
They angrily blamed Moses and then blamed God.

Five weeks had passed, and at the end of the fifth week they came to Aaron and urged him to make gods that they could see .. humbler gods who would comfort them, and be of ..
A gentler visible appearance .. Aaron agreed!

He asked them to bring all their gold to him as a donation. They freely gave, and all the gold piled up before him.

That gold was a gift to them from God Himself through the Egyptians, now it was used to make an idol!

What an INSULT to GOD, THE GREATEST GIVER OF ALL .. What a waste!! We can learn from this .. sow your money into good soil .. not into lost causes.

Your giving needs to bring glory to God. He will surely prosper you.

Aaron melted the gold and graved it into an image of a golden calf, an idol to be worshipped. He raised his voice above the noise of the people.

Here is your god oh Israel”.. The people replied, These are the gods who brought us out of the land of Egypt.”

The next morning they offered sacrifices to the calf and not to God as Aaron had commanded. They used their leader to their own ends, there was no respect for him.

Then they sat down to eat a well prepared rich feast. They drank wine in abundance and then rose up to play .. Play? They were engaging in Pagan rituals and orgies. There was lusty jubilation in the camp, they danced in “wild abandon.”

Read Exod 32:25. They had forgotten about the mountain of God and were fulfilling the lust of the flesh.

But God, who sees all, was watching their behaviour and told Moses to go down quickly and return to them.

God actually had, had enough and was ready to destroy them. Moses interceded for Israel and pacified His anger, by reminding Him of His Promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

SUDDENLY! THUNDER TORE THE HEAVENS IN TWO!

THE BREAKING OF THE TABLETS.

The air itself exploaded! And there stood Moses!!
He was holding the two white stones written by the hand of The Lord God. He angrily

smashed them on the side of the mountain into small sharp jaggered pieces.

A second quaking shook the earth. Then Moses came striding into the middle of the camp. People seeing his fury, stepped aside making a path for him.

He took a great hammer and beat the golden calf into fine powder. He then mixed it into the water and forced it down the throats of the people. UGH!

Moses could see that Aaron had let the people get out of control. He shouted to the people.”All who are on the Lords side, come here.”
“The Lord commands you to go throughout the camp and kill everyone who are worshippers of that calf .. even your brothers, friends and neighbours.”

The Levites obeyed Moses and about 3,000 people died that day!

Then the Lord sent a plague on the people because they had worshipped the golden calf that Aaron had made.

Did the lsraelites really think that this man made idol, of a golden calf, could replace their God given leader, Moses? I dont think so!!

MODERN DAY IDOLS.

There are many modern day idols that are still worshipped today.

1. Our IDENTITY. It is easy to place our identity in something other than God.

2. MONEY AND CONSUMERISM. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor.

3. ENTERTAINMENT. This can easily develop into an obsession.

4. SEX, As in Pornography, Adultery and Promiscuous behaviour.

5. COMFORT. All kinds of ungodly Leisure.

6. MODERN TECHNOLOGY. Phones, Television, and Computers.

7. OUR POSSESSIONS. Our homes, our Cars.

8. Our APPEARANCE. The money we spend on age defying technology.

An idol is something we we worship above our God. If He does not have His rightful place in our hearts, satan will use it as a tool to turn us away from God.

God has blessed us with good things, but we are not to value them above Him.

Even the smaller things, seemingly harmless things, can turn our attention away from God.
Let me ask you, what stops you from reading the Word of God?

What hinders you from praying to Him?

See Col 3: 1,2. Matt 6:20,21.

GOD WILL BLESS A PERSON WHOSE, HEART IS WHOLLY DEVOTED TO HIM!

Israel’s experience is a lesson for us today.
Even though we justify our actions as Aaron did, through reason or logic or the blaming of others, we still are violating God’s commands.

We will be held accountable for our sins ..
unless we repent! then ask for forgiveness.

Aaron lied to Moses, the calf did not just “pop” out of the fire beautifully engraved by itself !

It was a work of a mans hands .. Aaron’s hands! .. Aaron had wilfully disobeyed a command of God and made the calf.

Exod 32:21.”You shall not make unto yourselves any graven image.” He also told the people that this calf had brought them out of the land of Egypt.

We do not know if Aaron repented or not, as the Word does not tell us.

What we do know is .. our personal responsibility is spoken about in John 4:24.

“GOD IS A SPIRIT AND THEY THAT WORSHIP HIM, MUST WORSHIP HIM IN SPIRIT, AND IN “TRUTH!”

Let’s return to the Lord our God and
grind all our man idols into powder and cast them into the fire of hell!!

THE LORD .. HE IS LORD .. WE WORSHIP HIM!Amen.

  1. We can so easily get side tracked by the things of this world Heather… unless,
We keep our focus on Jesus & look fully into His wonderful face & the things of this Earth grow strangely dim in the light of His glory & grace, as the old hymn tells us.
    Bless you sweet friend, ❤️
