THE BOOK OF EXODUS .. Law And Grace, Comparisons and Contrasts.

LAW AND GRACE.

We now know that the Exodus under Moses is a graphic type of that greater Exodus in Christ : it is meant to speak to us of this ; and it is well therefore to fix in your mind these points of comparison and contrast. You may need to read this several times.😊

MAIN POINTS OF COMPARISON.

The Exodus brought a mighty emancipation for Israel.
The Gospel brings deliverance from the guilt and penalty and bondage from sin.

JESUS SETS YOU FREE.

The Exodus centred in the Passover and the slain lamb.
The Gospel centres in the Great Passover of Calvary and the Lamb of God slain, (Jesus) from the foundation of the world.

The Exodus came for ever afterwards commemorated in the Passover feast.

So Christ is our passover sacrifice for us; therefore let us keep the feast. (Communion) or (TheLord’s Supper)

Exod 12:19. 1Cor 5:7,8a.

MAIN POINTS OF CONTRAST.

The sheltering blood in the Exodus was merely that of an animal. In the Gospel it is the Precious blood of Jesus Christ.
In the one case many lambs were slain; in the other, it was ..

”One for all .. and Once for all.”

The Exodus was national, therefore limited to to Israel.
The Gospel is universal!

“For whosoever will may come.” HALLELUJAH !!

It’s characteristic word of address being ..
“WHOSOEVER” will may come. And that refers to you!

The one was deliverence from Physical bondage ; the other from Spiritual bondage.
One was “Temporary” and the other is .. “Eternal.”

The first opened up the way to an earthly Canaan. The other to a forever home in the Kingdom of God.

WHY WAS THE LAW GIVEN?
To provide a written standard of righteousness, taking the place of the oral law, where the fathers taught their children verbally.
Now Israel had been constituted as a nation and possess permanent standards of morality .. expressing the Divine IDEAL for character and conduct.
Deut 4:8. Psl 119: 7-9.

To expose and identify sin. As solid objects become black when silhouetted against a bright background, so sin unrecognised shows up and is marked out against the light of the law.

Paul the apostle tells us that the Law entered that the offence might become obvious .. (known.) Roms 10:20. He also says .. By the Law is the knowledge of sin. Romans 3:20.

Then he reminds us that if it was not for the Law, we would ‘not’ have the knowledge of sin. Roms 7:7.

So the law was added because of our transgressions, that they might be exposed as an offence against God.
Also to reveal the Divine holiness of God, with all the privileges attached to it, but not allowing those privileges turn into presumption.

Then there is the love of God, especially seen in the Gospels. Yet keep in your mind that the love of God is not at all apart from His Power and Holiness. Some churches today divorce Divine love from His Holiness. You can’t go on sinning and get away with it!

THE FIRE OF GOD.

Fire is a symbol of holiness .. the God of Sinai is a holy God and truly in his holiness .. OUR GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE !!

THE LAW AND THE GOSPEL.
The law is done away with in Christ. The Mosaic law was emphatically and conclusively done away with as a means of Salvation.

Roms 10:4. “CHRIST IS THE END OF THE LAW FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS TO EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES.”

He is saying that all who believe in
Him are made right with God.

All the ethics of the law are found in the new Testament. They are included as , “principles” and are not a part of the Mosaic law.

The keeping of them is .. NOT OBLIGATORY FOR SALVATION .. but the RESULTS OF SALVATION!YOU OBEY HIM BECAUSE YOU LOVE HIM !!

The Gospel is both for us and Israel for an inward change .. through the transforming Power of the Holy Spirit .. not in the keeping of the letter of the law.

See this wonderful verses from Roms 8:3,4.

“WHAT THE LAW COULD NOT DO IN THAT IT WAS WEAK THROUGH THE FLESH .. GOD SENDING HIS OWN SON IN THE LIKENESS OF SINFUL FLESH AND FOR SIN, AND CONDEMNED SIN’S CONTROL OVER US.
SO THAT WE DO NOT FOLLOW THE LAW BUT INSTEAD .. WALK BY THE SPIRIT.”
