No 1. THE BOOK OF 2ND SAMUEL. David’s Kingly Reign.

SECOND SAMUEL IS THE BOOK OF KING DAVID’S REIGN.

King David.  A man after God’s own heart.

INTRODUCTION:

The book covers forty years when David reigns as King, immediately after Saul’s death.

King David reigned in Hebron over Judah for seven years and six months. Then in Jerusalem, he reigned over all of Israel and Judah for thirty-three years.

David is the real founder of the Monarchy. He was the organizer of Israel’s religious worship: the pre-eminent Hero-Ruler and Poet of his people.

His throne continued from the throne of Judah right up to the captivity of Israel and the Promised Messiah, who was to come from David’s line.

JESUS CHRIST!

The promised MESSIAH.

The book of David’s reign was divided into two portions, each of twenty years.

The foremost part is ‘triumphant’ for David because he walked in faith and obedience to God.

In the second half, it becomes ‘ugly.’ There are black spots, tangles, and tragic trials.

In the first part, we sing with David in his triumph, and in the second part, we weep with him in his troubles.

There are twelve chapters in each portion. Chapters 11-12 record David’s sin and his repentance.

It was as though the prosperity he enjoyed exposed him to the temptation of unguardedness and indulgence.

TRIUMPHS TURN INTO TROUBLES THROUGH SIN.

HIS TRIUMPHS:

The victories he won through Civil War. His glorious Kingdom over both Judah and Israel.

HIS TROUBLES:

The troubles in his family. The rape of Tamah resulted in the death of Amnon.

The Absolom revolt.                                        David’s problems in the nation to deadly pestilence.

THE CENTRAL SPIRITUAL MESSAGE:

SIN PAYS ITS TOLL!

The second book of Samuel emphasizes that we all sin, ( Romans 3:23 )- whether it be King or commoner- whoever it is!

Sin bears bitter fruit.

Sin is the destroyer of prosperity.

Sin brings suffering.

Sin always starts with something small and leads to another of a worse kind.

It was the lust of the eyes that brought David undone, and sin led to murder! We will look deeper into this in a later study.

Like Job, we need to make a Covenant with our eyes not to look at that which is seductive, so we do not give way to sin and make things worse for ourselves.

Let’s walk by faith and not sight so our desires become His. Let us be careful what we put before our eyes. Only you have control of this. If you see something contrary to scripture on your television, change the channel, or turn it off!

If it has been offensive to God, then confess it as SIN!

IT IS AMAZING HOW AN EVIL SUGGESTION CAN WORK ITS WAY INTO YOUR SPIRIT AND SOUL AND WORKS ITS WAY INTO YOUR MIND,  INTO YOUR ATTITUDES AND ACTIONS. (even your  dreams).

SIN IS LIKE A CANCER FROM HELL.

THE ONLY REMEDY IS THE BLOOD OF JESUS.

One glimpse of pornography can lead to child abuse! This sin of lust is one example that shows an opening of a door in your mind giving room to satan and his evil demons, which will cause you to look upon children lustfully… followed by an actual attempt to molest them.

Ponder deeper with me upon Philippians 4:8. and we will look at the interpretation of this verse.

Whatever is PURE: Authentic and accurate!

Whatever is LOVELY: Honourable and admirable!

Whatever is of GOOD REPORT: Beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and considerate! Think about these things.

SCRIPTURE  SHOULD BE OUR YARDSTICK OF MEASUREMENT for living the Christian life.

Samuel anointed David as King of Israel.

This is a challenging passage, really; it pertains to life’s experiences and our choices.

If you follow these examples, then the God of Peace will be with you always and He will crown your efforts with Success!

Amen.
