No 5.THE SECOND BOOK OF SAMUEL. The Revenge of Absalom, Following Tamar’s Rape.

Today we continue the devastating story following Tamar’s rape. Remember, she had found refuge in the home of her brother Absalom, yet lived in isolation as a DESOLATE woman.

Defenceless Tamar.

King David heard what happened, and officials reported that he was ”angry.”

The Dead Sea scrolls and the Septuagint (the Greek version of the old Testament) explain why he took no action, saying; “But he did not punish his son Amnon because he loved him, for he was his firstborn.”

We don’t know the reason for his inaction, according to God, David should have disciplined his son Amnon for the very reason he didn’t punish him. ‘BECAUSE’ HE LOVED HIM!

GOD’S DISCIPLINE PROVES HIS LOVE!

Read Hebrews 8:5-7. “MY CHILD, DON’T MAKE LIGHT OF THE LORD’S DISCIPLINE, AND DON’T GIVE UP WHEN HE CORRECTS YOU. FOR THE LORD DISCIPLINES THOSE HE LOVES, AND HE PUNISHES EACH ONE HE ACCEPTS AS HIS CHILD.”

Absalom didnt say anything to his brother, but he hated him exceedingly because of what he had done to Tamar.

Hate and bitterness then led to…

Choose your friends wisely! Jonadab, an evil and crafty man

MURDER!

Two years passed, and Absalom threw an elaborate feast at Baal-Hazor. He persuaded the King to allow Amnon to attend with all his brothers to celebrate the end of the sheepshearing season.

So, Absalom prepared a feast fit for a King!

THE DEADLY BANQUET!

There gathered the glory of David’s kingdom, the next generation, eighteen men and lads. While laughing and talking, they all enjoyed the succulent food and remarkable wines!

When evening came, and their hearts were merry, Absalom’s servants surrounded Amnon. At Absalom’s command, they drew their knives tand stabbed him to death!

Absalom commands Amnon’s death.

The rest of the King’s sons rose ‘horrified’ and escaped. He stood back and gladly watched the murder of his brother Amnon turned away with a smirk on his face!

The news swiftly reached David that all his sons were dead at the hand of Absalom. David tore his garments and threw himself upon the ground, and his advisers also tore their clothes in horror and sorrow.

Jonadab, the cousin of Amnon, arrived with the news that only Amnon was dead.

Remember that the whole scenario of Tamar’s rape came at Jonadab’s advice that Amnon should deceive David and the Kingdom that he was so ill in bed, which led to her violation.

See chpt 13:3-6. Here again, he puts the entire blame upon Absalom.

Jonadab was now the carrier of good news to David to take attention off of himself. He was a wicked and crafty man!

But God saw, as He knew the man’s ❤ heart.

No sin we try to hide will ever go unpunished because our God is a God of righteousness and justice. You cannot sin and get away with it!

Suppose you have a secret unconfessed sin that you have hidden or are hiding right now. Know that:

“THE PAYMENT FOR SIN IS SPIRITUAL DEATH. BUT THE FREE GIFT OF GOD IS ETERNAL LIFE THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD.” Roms 6:23.

When you confess your sin, you are are free from it’s consequences no longer under condemnation.

Then you can live your life in RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PEACE AND BE SET FREE FROM ITS POWER.

IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING WITH SIN, THE ANSWER FOR YOU IS THAT FORGIVENESS IS FOUND IN JESUS CHRIST, OUR LORD!

You can pray, “Oh Lord, please forgive me.

Oh Lord, I’m the one;

no one else is the problem.

It’s my heart;

It’s my heart.

I’m to blame;

I am the one.”

Thank you, JESUS

”PLEASE SAVE ME LORD JESUS, FROM ALL MY SIN, INIQUITIES, AND TRANSGRESSIONS.” I now surrender my life to you.”
